Five Roles of JNF, 1930s
This is a poster describing the role of the JNF in the 1930s. According to the poster, the five main roles of the KKL-JNF were:
Draining the swamps
Acquiring land for settlement.
The Jewish National Fund (JNF) was founded in 1901 in order to buy and develop land in Ottoman Palestine for Jewish settlement. In the ensuing years, both during the British Mandate and after the establishment of the State of Israel, the JNF planted millions of trees, built dams and reservoirs, and developed more than 250,000 acres of land for settlement. The JNF was founded by the Zionist movement, and its campaigns aimed at attracting the support of Diaspora Jews . The blue JNF collection box symbolized the partnership between Israel and the Diaspora and was once found in many Jewish homes and organizations.
This poster offers many teaching opportunities.
Teachers of Jewish History could show the poster to demonstrate Israel’s development in the 1930s. The poster could also trigger a discussion about the JNF then and now and about the relationship between Israel and Jews in the Diaspora.

Teachers in Jewish schools, even if not officially teaching Jewish Studies, could use this poster to motivate their students and connect items about Israeli and Jewish history to General Studies. Geography teachers could show this poster to highlight a number of topics: ecology, land reclamation, the importance of forests, water preservation, farming, the water cycle, and more generally the advantages and disadvantages of human influence on earth. Likewise, Science teachers could use this poster when discussing the reciprocal relations between human beings and nature.
