Education is a complex profession. In his definitive article, the educational psychologist Lee S. Shulman wrote that besides knowledge of the content they teach, teachers must acquire Pedagogical Content Knowledge. Content knowledge refers to the "what" in teaching, while Pedagogical Content Knowledge refers to the "how" of teaching: knowledge of curriculum, educational contexts, methodology, strategies and more. In recent years teachers also need knowledge on how to use technology effectively to enhance learning experiences.
The education department of the National Library of Israel has developed a range of opportunities for professional development that are aimed at contributing to the acquirement of Pedagogical Content Knowledge for educators in Jewish educational systems. The professional development activities offered by the National Library include:
Introduction to the collections of the library.
Familiarity with the education website of the library.
The benefits of primary sources in education.
Effective integration of primary sources in teaching.
